Commissioner Responsibilities

  • Irene serves as the Vice-Chair for the Human Services Committee for Ingham County. She started this position in January of 2025.

  • Irene is a supervisory steward for Teamsters 243. As a seasoned labor activist she also has rallied with the Lansing area UAW for improved contract provisions in 2023.

  • Irene is a long term board member of The Capital Area Housing Partnership which develops strong, diverse neighborhoods with a focus on affordable housing, homeownership opportunities, and financial security for our neighbors throughout mid-Michigan. 

  • Irene serves on the Administrative Board is the governing board that is comprised of 12 local elected officials from the cities of Lansing and East Lansing, and the counties of Clinton, Eaton & Ingham

  • The Lansing Regional SmartZone funds local partners to deliver exceptional entrepreneurial support services to our region with the aim to grow our high-tech economy.

  • Since 1974 the Tri-County Office on Aging (TCOA) has been the region’s one-stop-shop for information and services that older adults, persons with disabilities and their families need to live independently and remain active in their communities.

    At TCOA, we are part of the community. We serve our neighbors, friends and family members every day. Our mission is to promote and preserve the independence and dignity of the aging population.

  • The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission is a public planning agency established in 1956, serving Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties in Mid-Michigan. Tri-County makes our region a more prosperous community by planning for a strong economy, reliable transportation, and sustainable infrastructure and natural resources.

  • The Board identifies public health problems and concerns, establishes priorities and advises the Board of Commissioners and the Health Department regarding community health matters and possible solutions. The Board recommends a program of basic health services to the Commissioners. Members review and evaluate programs and policies, and also assist the Health Department in informing the community and Commissioners of Health Department programs.

  • The Parks & Recreation Commission or its designated representatives may approve and sign agreements for the rental of County park facilities, such as pavilions, ball fields, etc., without further approval of the Board of Commissioners, provided the form of such agreements are approved by the County Attorney.

  • Appointed by the Board of Commissioners, upon the recommendation of the County Services Committee. 3 year terms. The Potter Park Zoo Board is responsible for reviewing Zoo operations, providing advice and recommendations to interested parties, including preparation of annual operations and capital improvements budgets, and the development of Zoo policies and procedures.

  • Welcome to Ingham County’s Broadband Initiative.  The Ingham County Commissioners are committed to ensuring our residents have affordable, high-speed broadband.  The State of Michigan received $1.559 billion in Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) funding from Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.  Find details on the Federal BEAD Program here: https://broadbandusa.ntia.doc.gov/funding-programs/broadband-equity-access-and-deployment-bead-program  This funding is prioritized to provide unserved and underserved residents access to high-speed internet access.

  • Representatives of the Community Corrections Advisory Board are appointed by the Ingham County Board of Commissioners Law & Courts Committee and the Lansing City Council for 6 year terms. The Ingham County/City of Lansing Community Corrections Advisory Board develops goals, criteria and guidelines for local community corrections planning and PA511 funded programs.

  • In 2022, Michigan's Solid Waste Program underwent significant updates with the passage of amendments to Part 115, Solid Waste Management, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451.
    These amendments mandate the replacement of existing county Solid Waste Management Plans with new Materials Management Plans (MMP). These plan will emphasize sustainable materials management approaches, such as recycling and composting, rather than merely focusing on landfilling waste.

  • The mission of Mid-State Health Network is to ensure access to high-quality, locally-delivered, effective and accountable public behavioral health and substance use disorder services provided by its participating members.

Irene Cahill

Irene Cahill currently works in the forestry operations and maintenance for the City of Lansing. At the County, she is the Vice-Chair of the Ingham County Human Services Committee, a board member for the Capital Area Housing Partnership, and outside of that she serves as the Chief Supervisory Steward with Teamsters 243 in the City of Lansing, and served as a former President and current member of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund.
